ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY
My Friends in Rotary,

It was my great pleasure to be with RC Ryde when Rotarian Grace was inducted and with RC Wahroonga when Rotarian Stuart transferred in from England. Next week I will be with RC Balgowlah to celebrate the induction of Rotarian Gemma and sometime soon, I hope to join RC Kurrajong-North Richmond when Valerie and Mike join us. Welcoming new Members is a very enjoyable part of the District Governor job. However what is even better is to enjoy the company of enthusiastic Rotarians who actively encourage new friends to come and join them doing good in the World....Absolutely Fabulous!!!!!

Well done to those Clubs and 8 others that inducted new Members in July. August is Membership month on the Rotary Calendar so please do whatever you can to bring more good people into your Club. More Members means more capacity for service  and means more fun for everyone.

Saturday 16 July was Graduation Day for Rotary Leadership Institute 34. 7 Rotarians returned to their Clubs with better understanding of matters Rotary and some new Rotary Friends.  Well Done to them for their commitment to completing the course. There are places available in the subsequent RLI courses so please consider registering - You will find it interesting, informative and entertaining.

The District Rotary Foundation Team are working hard on approving Grants. D9685 has 32 District Grant applications and 39 Global Grant applications in the pipeline. Look out for more information next month about the projects that the grants will enable and the lives that will be better because of Rotary. This is Rotary Serving Humanity - To fund the grants, we need to be giving.

Please save the date.........28 November! Our District’s ROTARY FOUNDATION MILLION DOLLAR DINNER is on at The Epping Club - You will have an opportunity to give and to share a really enjoyable experience with your fellow Rotarians.

The DG Official Zone Visit rolled into the Beaches Zone last Saturday night. The attendees were entertained by the Village Big Band. 20 vigorous musicians generated a lot of energy and BIG entertainment throughout the night, and there was some mighty fine dancing. There was also some Rotary business done. The Presidents of RC Brookvale, Belrose, Upper North Beaches discussed the plans for Club cooperation on Pub2Pub, Bognor St Lights projects. Rtn Lynne Shoring from RC Manly spoke about her sanitation project in PNG. Exciting times ahead for The Beaches Clubs. The meeting was coordinated by AG Warren McGurgan with help from RC Belrose volunteers. Thanks to them, everyone had a great night and MOST of the jokes on the tables were really funny!

The DG Official Zone Visit rolls into The Mountains this Saturday night, looking forward to it! Please try and get along to the Visit in your Zone, bring your partner and have some FUN!

Have a great Rotary month, Talk to you soon...

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE - CHAIRS AND CAMERAS
Messages from Susan Wakefield - District International Service Director:

1200 CHAIRS NEED A NEW HOME

There 1200 school chairs. Described as steel legs, plastic buckets – all in good condition.

Sizes range from smaller Kindy size to full size Year 12 student chairs.

Pick up is at a warehouse in Cameron Park (just off the Newcastle-Sydney freeway Cardiff turnoff.)

Groups can have as many as they want to take.

Collection is by contacting Alan – 0429497868 – tell him that they have been referred by Brian Coffey from Rotary.

They are extremely keen to get them moved out. Maybe suitable for child care groups, churches, halls, oversea projects.

These chairs CAN NOT go back into the Department of Education schools – as this is where they came from.

8 CAMERAS NEEDED

Lucy Hobgood- Brown is an enthusiastic Rotarian,  Project Manager of Hand up the Congo and a great supporter of African families who now live in Australia. She is setting up a project which will probably be called “Breaking the Conflict Cycle”.

She has made the following request and hopefully there will be some folk who might be able to assist  her. She has indicated that the cameras will be needed on 13th August. If you are able to assist, Contact the Photo Project directly.

“We have a need  for 8 digital compact cameras + memory cards for the “Breaking the Conflict Cycle” project. Used cameras are happily accepted, if they are in good condition. Or if someone wishes to buy one or more new cameras to show their support of African refugees involved with this project, the suggested model is Canon IXUS 175,  approx. $130. Memory cards are also needed. Donors may send their gift to GLAPD Photo Project c/o Nadine Shema, Po Box 887 Fairfield NSW 2165. To learn more about GLAPD, go to www.glapd.org or ring Nadine on 0432 434 766.”

EMERGENCY SERVICE PERSONNEL RECOGNISED
Over 350 guests attended the second annual, Rotary NSW Emergency Services Community Awards Presentation Dinner at Dockside Pavilion, Darling Harbour on the 23rd July to acknowledge and celebrate selfless community service performed by members of the six New South Wales Emergency Service Agencies.  Funds raised through the awards support an Australian Rotary Health, PhD Research Scholarship investigating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Emergency Services personnel.
The event is an initiative of the Rotary Districts and Clubs of NSW and is the only time all six NSW Emergency Service Agencies are recognised in a combined awards program (Fire & Rescue NSW, Marine Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service and NSW Volunteer Rescue Association).
Stephen Humphreys, District Governor of Rotary District 9675 said “Rotary is honoured to recognise the selfless work performed by the many paid and volunteer members of our Emergency Services.  Their work epitomises Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self”.
The Hon David Elliott MP, Minister for Emergency Services was on hand to present the awards and congratulated the winners for their outstanding service.
Twenty-four (24) finalists from across the state were recognised and presented with commemorative plaques.  Six Officers of the Year were announced - one for each of the six Emergency Service Agencies.  The finale of the evening saw two Overall Officers of the Year announced – one Volunteer Officer of the Year and one, Paid Officer of the Year.
