What does a Days for Girls workshop look like? Here are 40 young people from William Clark College, Kellyville, guided by Days for Girls Rotarians producing 300 kits and 1300 components during a holiday camp.
Great Job, Days for Girls Team!
This month was Science Challenge month with hundreds of young people engaged in scientific activities that were challenging, educational and FUN! This program was conducted by PP Galvin Ralston, supported by local Clubs, at 5 different locations across D9685. The young people and their teachers got the most pleasure from the activities but the Rotarians were not far behind.
RI Director Noel Trevaskis visited the District to speak at a meeting of RC Lower Blue Mountains. The Club did a fine job of hosting him and the members in attendance heard Noel’s views on the importance of new member recruitment and support for Rotary Foundation. He also told a couple of very humorous jokes that are worth re-telling some time. All in good taste. The one about his visit to the Canary Islands, followed by a visit to the Virgin Islands was the best!
Through the month Bette and I were to privileged to take greetings and congratulations from Rotary and D9685 to a number of Clubs that celebrated significant anniversaries.
RC West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook celebrated 30 years of service,
RC Penrith Valley and RC Berowra celebrated 40 years
RC Dural will celebrate 50 years in June and
RC Katoomba will also celebrate …….wait for it!!....Sound the trumpets!!…..80 years!!!
That is a lot of years of Doing Good in the World! Well done to those Clubs for their outstanding service to Rotary and their communities.
Child protection procedures are vital for the ongoing success of our Youth programs. Our understanding and implementation of these requirements will ensure that our activities are beyond reproach and our reputation is protected. So the work of Club Administration Director, PP Mike Hallen, and Child Protection Officer, PDG John Wakefield, is to be commended. They recently conducted a well attended (40 Rotarians) “Working With Children” seminar that answered many questions and increased understanding. Thank you Mike, John and the Rotarians who participated.
I attended some very impressive meetings this month during which Clubs recognised extraordinary performance by members of their communities. The programs were Pride of Workmanship and Police Officer of the Year. I was honoured to make POW presentations for the Combined Blue Mountains Clubs and for RC The Hills-Kellyville and POOTY presentations for the Combined Blue Mountains Clubs and the Combined Penrith Clubs and RC Ryde.
All Rotarians should be very proud of these events because we do a great service in providing the platform for the Awardees’ performance to be publicly recognised. Without your efforts, their efforts would go unrecognised. Well done to these Clubs for their work and commitment to their Community Heroes.
So the end of this Rotary year is nearly upon us. Changeover season is about to start and the next chapter of the Rotary story will begin. Please consider the opportunity for your Club to give some End of Year support to the Rotary Foundation. Please join Rotarians from across the District, DGE Peter and I at the District Changeover - Hornsby RSL on Saturday 1 July. PLEASE REGISTER HERE.
This is my last contribution to D9685 e-News as your District Governor. Thank you for your efforts in SERVING HUMANITY this year. Every Club has made a significant contribution that we can all be very proud of because we have improved and enhanced the lives of so many. Well done to you all!
Your D9685 RLI Faculty are trialling a one-weekend-two-day RLI as an adjunct to our normal 3 days over three different weekends. If this suits your availability better, please register for this opportunity.
PP Clive Mellor of the Rotary Club of Dee Why Warringah and PDG Ian Scott of the Rotary Club of Central Blue Mountains in District 9685 have developed a souvenir stamp sheet to commemorate The Rotary Foundation’s Centennial.
The souvenir stamp sheet is an individually numbered A4-sized sheet with 8 stamps embedded, each with a Foundation Centennial tab and set in a Foundation themed design. The stamps are legal Australia Post issue and able to be removed and used on mail items; they are common postage stamps on offer and do not contain any souvenir images or logos. The tabs may be removed and affixed on mail items along with the postage stamp. However ,the stamp sheets make a great souvenir and if framed an ideal gift for guest speakers at club meetings
All profits from the stamp sheet will go to The Rotary Foundation.
Cost per sheet is $25 including postage and packing.
To account for the high cost of international postage from Australia, mail order sales to Australian and New Zealand purchasers will be in Australian dollars, to all other parts of the world sales will be in US dollars.
We'd love to showcase your club's 2016/17 projects, activities and events at District Changeover. Please send 10-15 high res engaging photos(smaller file size would be appreciated) to changeoverphotos@rotarydistrict9685.org.au. Please send the photos by Tuesday 20 June 2017.
All 9685 clubs are invited to start organising their Hat Day “Lift the Lid” event.
When:- 10th October 2017 which is World Mental Health Day.
Please look at this video Lift The Lid ARH for a message from ARH Chair Elect Greg Ross
The direction of ARH research into Mental Health, is of vital importance to us all, particularly since statistics clearly demonstrate the staggering fact that the age when problems start is dropping alarmingly and youth suicides are on the increase. We owe it to the children of our country to help NOW.
Marshall received his exciting news just in time to head for New York in June to take up his studies at Columbia University for an MA in Psychology and Education.
His Area of Focus is Peace and Conflict Resolution.
As a teacher, speaker and author he envisions working in disadvantaged communities helping them to combat abuse, bullying, domestic violence and suicide.
Rotary support will be given to Marshall at home and overseas. Mosman is his sponsor club here and the Rotary Club of Wall Street is his host sponsor club in New York.
CAROLINE ENGLISH
Caroline English has just received the exciting news that she has been awarded a US$30,000 Global Grant Scholarship funded by our District and The Rotary Foundation.
Her Area of Focus is Economic and Community Development.
She leaves in September to study for a Master of Public Administration at the London School of Economics. Her involvement with the UN Youth Association of Victoria, her role as Chief Financial Officer for the Oaktree Foundation and her current role in Strategy Consulting with Port Jackson Partners has led to her plans to work in Economic Development in South East Asia.
There will be Rotary support for Caroline at home and in London. Turramurra is her Club sponsor at home and the Rotary Club of Leytonstone and Woodford is her host sponsor for her time overseas.
Our Peace Fellow for 2016-17 is Patricia Garcia OAM, who has just completed her three months of study at the Peace Centre at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. The 22 Fellows are hosted by the Rotary Club of Bangkok and other Bangkok clubs.
Patricia found the course to be extremely intense, challenging and inspiring and is already making plans for future work in peace and conflict resolution.
Patricia is a highly respected humanitarian and human rights advocate who has worked in war zones for over 20 years (Afghanistan, Sudan, Burma) and has worked for many global NGOs, managing programs with responsibility for emergency and post conflict recovery.
She was a state finalist for Australian of the Year (Humanitarian) and has been recognised with an OAM.
Patricia is looking forward to speaking at Rotary Clubs.
