ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE
My Friends in Rotary,
Welcome to the next six five months of your journey in Rotary.

Firstly, let me congratulate Monica Hart and Peter Kirkwood for their recent richly deserved recognitions by their local communities for the difference they have made and continue to make:
  • Monica received the Community Volunteer of The Year Award in recognition of her volunteer work on the Central Coast
  • Peter received the Kuringai 2018 Citizen Of The Year Award, his crowning achievement being the completion of the new PCYC facility in Hornsby.

Now is a good time to check how you are progressing towards your goals for the year.

Now is a good time for clubs to check how your members are feeling – are they engaged, are they enjoying participating, are they frustrated with aspects of the club, are they feeling ignored?

I’ve recently spoken to too many new, relatively new or ex Rotarians who are feeling sidelined.  They joined to do good, to get involved, to make a difference.  They leave because they are not offered the opportunity to get involved in club activities or their ideas are not considered with respect.  Member retention is a key element of a healthy club and one that will repay well beyond the effort required.

I’ve attended three significant club events in the past week – Kincumber’s Patricia Cam shipbuilders memorial presentation, The Hills Kellyville’s Australian citizenship ceremony and Lower Blue’s Gnome Convention.  All significant for the purpose of the event, all had representation from the three tiers of government (local, state, federal), all had great participation by the local communities, all build upon prior events so now have created an identity in their communities.

I believe each of these events are also significant for another two reasons:
  1. They provide non Rotarians the opportunity to be involved as contributors (stall holders, etc) and as volunteers, and
  2. They provide an opportunity for members of the community to connect, to meet new people, to identify.

These two reasons will change our communities and our clubs, will make them stronger.  So congratulations to these clubs and to all of you running similar community events.

To grow a tree there first has to be a seed.   That seed first has to be planted and then nurtured with sunlight and water.

Similarly successful club activities like the above have to start with an idea.  The idea is often wrapped in doubt, risk and naysayers.  The idea has to be protected and turned into action then nurtured with enthusiasm, with bravery and with participation.

As Nike has said – just do it!

Encourage newer members to get started and give them the opportunity to get involved.

The outcomes will surprise you and benefit us all.

HONOUR OUR FALLEN
Honour Our Fallen is a newly raised not-for- profit organisation (registration pending) formed to honour and preserve the memory of those deceased military personnel, buried in Australia, who served our Nation in all conflicts and theatres since the Boer War.

In partnership with local Schools, who will research and locate ex-Service personnel graves in local cemeteries, in any area and thereafter, on each Anzac Day beginning in 2018, place an Australian flag on each gravesite or memorial plaque.
We request all veteran groups, historical, community, ex-Service associations and schools through member newsletters, and individual families and friends of deceased veterans, to individually complete a simple “Flag Request” form to assist us in our research and commemorative activities.

Honour Our Fallen was launched on Remembrance Day, 11th November 2017, through media announcements and via correspondence to a number of Government authorities requesting their assistance, with positive results to date. The program will allow us to implement our plans in concert with the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1.
Commemoration will include Army, Navy, Airforce, Nursing Corps, Women’s Services, Merchant Seamen and Peacekeeping personnel from all conflicts dating back to the Boer War.

Honour Our Fallen’s mission is to perpetuate the memory of all deceased veterans and to build pride in our community, particularly our youth, in the virtues of service to our Nation and respect for those who died protecting our freedom and way of life. This in turn should lead to greater recognition and respect for those presently serving in uniform, in particular, a feeling of acceptance on their returning from overseas duties.

Go to honourourfallen.com, complete a Flag Request form and press submit. We do the rest pre ANZAC Day 2018 in all requested areas of the Nation.
