THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S NEWSLETTER

BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD

My Friends in Rotary,

As the time to hand over the baton to incoming Governor Bruce rapidly approaches, I look back at the past 12 months with a great deal of satisfaction and gratitude.  I have been very fortunate in that it has been a very enjoyable and relatively incident-free time for me; we’ve had no major natural disasters such as bushfires or floods in our District, I’ve had a great team of talented and dedicated members who have gone out of their way to ensure that the year has been as successful as it could possibly have been, and Harold and I have been overwhelmed, and humbled, by the warmth and dedication that all members have offered us where-ever we have been this year.  District 9685 truly is a fantastic District and it’s been a great honour for me to serve as your Governor!

As you no doubt appreciate, a large proportion of my time this past year has been spent visiting Clubs and attending some of the fantastic programs and projects that you have carried out. To me, this has been by far the best part of my year as Governor.  Harold and I have been blown away learning of the wonderful work that you do in the name of Rotary and I sincerely thank you for your dedication and commitment to making the world a better place.   You have certainly risen to President Ravi’s challenge to Be A Gift to the World!

It was a privilege for me to be able to recognise some of the great work that you have done this year - at the Presidents’ Meeting last week - when the District Awards for 2015-16 were presented.  Congratulations to those clubs who received the winning trophy in each category, and also for Clubs who received a Certificate of Meritorious Service (Unfortunately, there can only be one winner!).  Whilst a couple of the awards are judged automatically from information provided on the web (Membership Growth, Website and Bulletin Awards) most are selected from applications that are submitted to the appropriate Avenues of Service Chair.  Not all Clubs seek recognition – they just ‘get on and do it’, so if your Club didn’t receive an award, maybe it’s because you didn’t put in an application!  However, I think it’s great for Clubs to be recognised for the hard work you do, and I do encourage you all to consider applying next year.

I know many of you are in wind-down mode at the moment and are thinking about the year ahead, but this hasn’t halted the huge number of functions that have been held in our District over the past month or so.  Harold and I have been to a number of community recognition nights – Pride of Workmanship, Community / Unsung Heroes, Vocational Excellence and Police Officer of the Year Awards nights, and also events to recognise community supporters of major events such as the Bobbin Head Classic (run jointly by Wahroonga, St Ives, Turramurra and Ku-ring-gai), Richmond’s thank you to the Volunteers who helped out at the Richmond Show, and Woy Woy’s thank you to their Opera in the Arboretum supporters.  These have been very enjoyable evenings and are a great way to expose Rotary to the wider community and at the same time recognise worthy people in our local communities.

This last month also saw three very successful MUNA programs held throughout the District – on the Central Coast, at Baulkham Hills High and at Penrith High, and I congratulate everyone involved in organising and running these events – not to mention all the school teams who participated. The trouble that most teams went to, to accurately represent their assigned countries was outstanding and the debating skills of the students was very commendable.   Maybe our District will sponsor the winner of the National MUNA again this year!  Winter RYPEN is also coming up in a couple of weeks so if you have a last minute candidate, contact RYPEN Chair, Dave Clark, for details.  I also had the privilege of congratulating the 20,000th student to attend RYDA on the Central Coast recently.  Another great program which is strongly supported by our District!

You will all be aware that District Changeover is being held on Saturday 25 June at Hornsby RSL from 6pm for 6.30pm start.  Just like Club Changeovers, the District Changeover is a celebration of the year that has passed and an opportunity to welcome in our new Governor, Bruce Lakin.  It will be a fun night:  we will be keeping the formalities to a minimum, there will be some entertainment, delicious food, a presentation of a few awards, and a great opportunity for fellowship.  Cost is $50.00 per person which includes a two course meal and a drink on arrival.  We are planning a photographic display of projects and activities carried out by clubs during the year and ask that each club sends in some (up to a dozen) good quality, high resolution photos of your signature events.  Please send these to changeoverphotos@rotarydistrict9685.org.au.  The aim is to have a large cross section of Club activities showcased.   It would be wonderful to have all clubs represented at the Changeover dinner and I encourage you all to register as soon as you can - registrations close on 17 June.....REGISTER HERE.

As I said at the beginning of the year, it’s not been my year, it’s been OUR year, and I’m merely the conductor of the orchestra – you’ve played the music, I’ve just helped you keep in tune!  Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity, and for the fantastic support you have shown to Harold and me.  It truly has been a once in a life-time experience and we have so many wonderful memories!

I look forward to seeing you on 25 June.

DISTRICT RECOGNISES GREAT CLUB EFFORTS
District Governor Gina took the opportunity at the Presidents' Meeting on Saturday 21 May to recognise the sterling efforts and achievements of many clubs during the 2015-16 year.  All clubs are deserving of recognition for the work being done and the task of selecting 'winners' was indeed difficult.

The District Governor's Shield, the District Governor's Trophy for Small Clubs, and The Rotarian Vocational Excellence Award will be presented at the District Changeover on 25 June.

RYDE & APIA CLUBS CHANGING FUTURES IN THE PACIFIC REGION WITH INTERPLAST
Through a Vocational Training Team grant, Interplast - with the generous support of the Rotary Clubs of Ryde and Apia - recently delivered a successful surgical skills workshop in Apia, Samoa.  The workshop was the first of its kind and the first time that Interplast has partnered with Rotary International for a Vocational Training Team grant.

Much more detail on this project is available in this report on the workshop.

Without the generous support of the two clubs and Rotary International, the program would not have been possible.  Interplast looks forward to continuing its longstanding relationship with Rotary Clubs in Australia and New Zealand and in partner countries to implement its life changing and lifesaving programs.

ORD MINNETT - MARKET UPDATE
The Australian stock market has been up for six consecutive weeks on the back of strong commodity prices, lower Australian dollar, healthy data sets locally and abroad, and lastly the RBA rate cut. However, investors remain wary of global growth prospects as uncertainty lingers over China and renewed talks about the US Federal Reserve increasing interest rates.

Australia’s jobs data printed close to expectations, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 5.7% (expectation: 5.8%). The Australian dollar remained soft, currently trading at US$0.7230. Oil Search recently announced plans to buy Papua New Guinea-focused InterOil for $US2.2 billion ($A3.04 billion) with the aim of boosting its liquefied natural gas development.
