ABC weekend morning presenter Simon Marnie was a big hit with the capacity crowd at the Lower Blue Mountains Rotary Community Night in Emu Plains Sports and Recreation Club on Tuesday.
 
A most entertaining speaker, Simon recounted the highs and lows of his outstanding career in radio – along with experiences as a food critic and judge of oysters and coffee at various high profile events.
 
The special guest made many friends in the Blue Mountains area as a result of critical on air support during the most recent Bushfires in Springwood and Winmalee. He has a strong listener base in the Mountains and many of those people joined the audience for the evening.
 
After his address, Rotary President Drew Fitzpatrick and Rotary Past Governor David Cook presented Simon with Paul Harris Fellow Recognition – in honour of his ongoing support for Rotary and so many other community organisations.

... Lower Blue Mountains Rotary has committed another US$1,000 to Rotary’s good works around the world – in the name of Simon Marnie.  Such good works include the eradication of Polio, peace and conflict resolution, maternal and child health, literacy, fresh water, mentoring of youth and many other projects.
 
During the evening, Rotary President Drew combined with Emu Plains Sports and Recreation Club CEO Andrew Gardner to present a cheque for $5,100 Gateway Family Services to as a boost to the organisation’s needed Christmas resources.  Accepting the cheque, a very grateful Gateway CEO Kerry Thomas told the crowd to donation was perfectly timed to assist with the purchase of Christmas hampers for needy families.
 
Whilst in the ‘giving’ mood, President Drew also presented Australian Rotary Health Group Chairman Susan Wakefield with a cheque for $1,000 for mental health research – representing the proceeds from the recent Hat Day collection.
 
Another highlight of the evening was the induction of three new Rotarians in Kathy Korevaar, Fiona McCulloch and David Kerrigan.  Many members of the public attended the special community night and expressed interest in the Rotary club.
 
Quality entertainment was provided by veteran bush poet Terry Regan and outstanding Ukulele Band, The Blue Mugs.
